  2. Okay, I just found your site today through Yearn to Learn. I've been teaching 21 years and I'm excited about starting WBT. I signed up on their site today and downloaded the ebook to get started. I read all of your January posts and will come back soon and continue through the months. Thanks a lot.

  3. Thanks for adding my to your list of blogs... I do have a correction for you though. I have been teaching for nine years. Last year was my FIRST year of third grade. I started following WBT the summer before I started teaching third grade. Unfortunately I did not know about it in my first eight years of teaching.

    1. Ah, sorry Deanna!! Sometimes I get confused when I am getting information from blogger profiles, older blog posts, WBT forum posts, etc. I apologize for getting your information confused! I am changing it right now to make it accurate :)

I would love to sponsor your 100 followers giveaway. I'm not sure what I'd contribute as I don't have a TPT store. I do have a PowerPoint that I created last year using the WBT Construction Kit for introducting the Super Improvers Wall to my students. I had thought about putting that on my blog, but I could let you use it for your giveaway instead as a one of a kind sorta prize rather than posting it on my blog. Just let me know if that's what you'd like. I could send it to you to look at if you want.

  7. Hi Miss L,
I'm excited to be learning about WBT and following your blog. I started my own blogger account, but I got in a bit of a muddle with my Google account names and passwords and decided to delete my first account and start over. So, I think you have two of me on your blog member list. If you could please delete the "Whole Brain Teacher in Abu Dhabi", and keep the "WBT in Abu Dhabi" member, I'd be way less embarrassed. Thanks so much, Tracy

  8. Hey Kirsten,

I loved how you had the guest blogger talk about making your blog appear in search engines. Do you have any other tips? I would love mine to appear as quickly as yours does!! What did you do to get this??:)

Thanks - I appreciate any tips!!

    1. Thanks Liann! I'm glad that so many people are enjoying the tip, it definitely helped me out when I found it!

Some other things I do to help is make sure I label all of my posts (which I think you do too), add a search gadget and also write a description for each post too.

Also, if you haven't already, make sure you add your blog to Google's search engine which can make your blog appear quicker than it randomly finding it over time: http://blogsearch.google.com/ping

      I hope this helps!

  9. Hey Miss L,

    2 Quick Questions:
    1) How did you get heading to appear at the top of your blog (Home, About, etc. etc.)

    2) How about the graphics on the right side of the blog?

Thanks so much! Enjoying your blog more and more!

    1. Hi Jason! Ok, I am going to give you this step-by-step just because I am not sure how familiar you are with blogger or not.
      - To change aspects of your blog you need to be on the blogger interface or dashboard which you can access by clicking "Design" in the most top right corner of your blog when you are viewing it.

      FOR HEADINGS
      - On the left hand side of the page you will see "Pages" listed under "Posts". Click "Pages".
      - You will automatically have a "Home" page as that will be your main blog.
      - Under the title of your blog you will see a grey bow titled "New page". By clicking this you can bring down a list where you will click "Blank page".
      - You can title your new page anything you wish and add content to it in a similar fashion to the template in which you write your blog posts.
      - Once you have multiple pages you will also notice that across from "New page" is "Show pages as" where you can chose to display your headings across the top of your blog (like mine) or down the side.

      FOR GRAPHICS
      - On the left hand side of the page you will see "Layout" under "Earnings" near the bottom of the page. Click "Layout"
      - This will show you a blueprint of your blog.
      - Somewhere on this blueprint (it is different for different people depending on your blog design) you will see "Add a Gadget". Click on this and it will bring up a pop-up window.
      - To add graphics scroll down through the list in the pop-up window until you see "Picture".
      - You will be given prompts on uploading the picture you like.
      - Some of the images on the right hand side of my blog are actually "Buttons" that will take you to an outside blog. To add these, scroll through this same list until you see "HTML/JavaScript"
      - Here you can enter the HTML code you get from the outside blog itself (just like I have a code you can copy under the "Grab my Button" image on my blog.
      - Once you have added your photo or button you can drag and drop them around your blueprint to put them in the order you want them.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you need further clarification on anything :)

  10. Miss L!
I'm very excited to have found your blog. I too am a Manitobian! This makes me excited because I haven't seen too many Manitobian blogs out there and doubly excited because it's about WBT.

I found WBT last spring and introduced Class-Yes to my class but didn't get much further into it than that. This year I'm really going to try to use it more. I'm only in the classroom in the mornings so I'm going to try to get the students going on this and then maybe I can have my afternoon colleague try it out too.

Just this week I started a classroom blog. There isn't anything up there yet but stay tuned next week for the beginning of getting ready!

    1. Cheryl I am SOOOOO happy you found me! I haven't found any teachers using WBT in Manitoba yet so this is so exciting for me!!

To be honest I have never heard of Gretna (I had to Google map it lol). I have just checked out your blog and can't wait for you to post more. Almost all of the blogs I follow are American so it is so nice to find another Manitobian blog, it makes it feel like you are right next door haha.

I hope to be talking to you lots as we blog this year :)

  11. Hi Miss L,

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your blog posts. I love your "fav websites" and also anything that you post about First Nation studies. I share your passion for the CBC 8th Fire series as well.

I checked out the "Whole Brain Teaching" lessons on You tube and so far this is the only serious departure I would make....we can still be friends! I just think that over time you might come to realize that these techniques might not work with all students. I know they certainly would not "win over" any of the middle school kids that I work with.

The rest of your stuff however.....awesome!!!! and I am very grateful.

    Sincerely,

    Gail

    1. Gail,

Thank you so much for not only visiting my blog but for taking the time to write such a wonderful message! :) It honestly makes me smile all day when I receive messages like this and I couldn't be happier that you are enjoying the material that I am putting on the blog.

I just wanted to direct you to one of the tabs at the top of my blog, "Whole Brain Teaching". In this section I describe what Whole Brain Teaching means to me as a teacher. I hope that what I am communicating is that my teaching style is very much tailored to the individual needs of my students (which changes from class to class, sometimes even day to day!). The actual management strategy of Whole Brain Teaching offers some strategies and techniques that may help me meet those goals, but is not the focus of my classroom. (In two of my classes I do not even use one strategy of WBT).

I agree, I think we can definitely be friends :)

      Best wishes!

  12. Miss L,

I loved your teaching portfolio that you just shared! I just finished student teaching and I'm thinking about making one myself, you have given me some ideas :)

It looks very professional and organized and SO easy to read!!!! Did you find Weebly easy to use? Did you have to design it or do a template? I'm not the best with designing webpages but if it was easy to use I might try and make something like that for myself.

    Thanks for the help!!!

I really like Weebly. I originally started blogging on Weebly before I switched to Blogger. I had picked a pre-made template but there are lots of tutorials on how to format your own as well. I would recommend it.

I love the linky on Madly Learning. I was suggesting to the blog owner that perhaps we should create a LIEBSTER award for Canadian Bloggers! Hope you stop by and become my newest follower!

    1. Ms. M, Thank you for visiting my blog! I share your thoughts on finding more Canadian bloggers. This is something I have actually shared with one of my Faculty of Education professors who is in charge of our ICT courses. Starting in January, one of our class's projects will be to actually create a list of Canadian bloggers and get a stronger network going! I love the idea of a Liebster-style award that is Canadian-based. Acknowledgement like that definitely kept me encouraged when I started out blogging! I am checking out your blog right now :)

  19. Dear Kirsten,

I came across your website while looking for resources for children and noticed that you have listed some really useful ones. I bet your readers are very grateful for finding so many resources all in one easily accessible place.

I was going through your website and noticed that our website Math Blaster (www.mathblaster.com) would fit in perfectly under the ‘Math Resources’ category. Math Blaster offers free grade and Math based worksheets, printables and educational games for kids. Hiccup’s Science Workshop (http://www.schoolofdragons.com/hiccups-science-workshop/) is another new venture of ours that features science experiments, free printables and worksheets with a focus on the scientific method and would fit in perfectly under the ‘Science Resources’ category. Is it possible to add these to your list of resources as well?

Thank you for taking the time to read this email. Adding us to your list is sure to help us reach our goal of making our educational material available to as many kids, parents and teachers as possible.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

  25. Hi,

I am contacting you because I am co-inventor in a project that is a new approach to STEM subjects. It is currently on Kickstarter and although I really believe in this project, there are very few visitors and I need help to get the word out there.

Your site looks fantastic ans I think your audience would like this kind of innovation news.

It is an new way to teach scientific phenomenon through stop motion animations. It is the combination of hands-on activities and technology, children with whom we tested it absolutely loved it and it was surprisingly effective.
Those who see the campaign feel very positive about it, it is not easy to reach people though. We need your help to let people know about it. Please take a look and tell me what you think. Is this something that you could stand behind and help us spread the word?

    Here is the campaign link:
